VISIT TO THE SILVOPASTURE EXPERIMENTS AT LOUGHGALL

Professor Jim McAdam’s recent lecture to the Society on ’Travels in Patagonia’ was so well-received that we are following it up with a site visit to his long-running field experiment at Loughgall.
Silvopasture is the practice of growing trees and raising livestock on the same ground. Loughgall is one of 6 sites across the UK where these experiments are being undertaken, using well-spaced trees and grazing sheep. It is an unfamiliar concept in Ireland, but the results are beginning to suggest that it could be a route towards more sustainable land management.
Prof McAdam will be present in person to demonstrate the plots and to discuss their implications.
Meet at 10.00 am at the AFBI Deerpark Farmyard, which is through a gateway in the wall of the Drumilly Estate on the B111 road from Richhill to Loughgall – see map below.
